brewerIn the Middle Ages you could not drink the water because it would make you sick. People drank fermented beverages (even children) because the alcohol created in the process killed bacteria. Brewers were members of a guild. Men (brewers) brewed beer, but by the late middle ages, were replaced by women (brewsters) who brewed ale.
